is Creation Religious?
Monday, July 02, 2007

Imagine this situation:

You are 14 years old and taking Biology in High School. Your instructor teaches the class something you have never heard before. He tells the class that pigs used to have wings and could fly!

You are surprised when you hear this, and you slowly turn to see the reaction of your fellow classmates. You are a bit surprised to see some of them nodding their heads in agreement.

You, however, are a free thinker. An amazing claim like this requires further investigation. What question would your teacher if he told you that pigs used to have wings and could fly?

With a little trepidation, you slowly raise your hand to politely ask the teacher:

“What is the evidence that pigs used to have wings and could fly?”

The teacher looks a bit upset and gives you a dissatisfied look. With a touch of anger the teacher replies that there is plenty of evidence, such as fossil evidence, that pigs used to be able fly. The teacher adds that that nearly all scientists believe pigs used to have wings.

You raise your hand again and respectfully ask: “What is the fossil evidence that pigs used to have wings and could fly?”

The teacher is now visibly upset and replies: “Are you religious? Do you have some kind of religious bias that causes you to question whether pigs could fly? This is a science class and in here we teach pigs used to be able to fly. If you do not believe that, you can discuss that in a social studies class, or at your church or at home with your parents. But in here, we teach science!!!”

But your question had nothing to do with religion!

The little story I just told you is one that I share with skeptics, and one that you can use as well. Skeptics love to claim that Creation is religious and that Evolutionism is science. When a skeptic tells you that Creation is religious, tell them the flying pig story. Questioning whether pigs could fly is not religious. Questioning whether humans have bacteria ancestors is also NOT religious, but skeptics always “play the religion card,” because they do not have a “science card.” Don’t let them get away with it!

Science is about observation and evidence. There is no religious bias if someone doubts pigs used to have wings, and there is no religious bias to doubt humans have bacteria ancestors.
