Biology Teacher Goes Nuts!
Monday, July 02, 2007

The Passionate Biology Teacher!

Recently I experienced something for the first time in my life. For 17 years I have been going to local high schools and handing my home made Creation vs. Evolution comic books to students. I always am off school property and never force the comic book on anyone (partly because they will just throw it out and it would be a waste).

Anyway, I was at Pacifica High School and an “old friend” came by to visit me.

Allow me to digress. About a year ago I spoke at Pacifica’s Bible Study, and he delighted in trying to heckle me. Unfortunately for him, he was humiliated when he said he thought matter and energy came from nothing, life came from non life, and that nature could have formed Mt. Rushmore by chance (the kids chuckled after he said that!)

At the end of my lesson I challenged him to a public debate and of course he refused.

Several students afterward said they thoroughly enjoyed the exchange and seeing him humbled.

So anyway, I am passing out the comics and this teacher comes rushing up to me (dressed in his best tee shirt) saying “if you don’t stop hassling these students I am going to call the police!”

I replied “Go ahead and call them. I know what the laws are. Here take a look.” I then handed him a sheet of paper I take with me when I pass out the comic books. The sheet lists three Supreme Court decisions that say what I do is legal (if you want to see it e mail me). You see, a side walk is a public forum; but you can not obstruct access, sell anything, force things on people or pass out illegal material. A copy of street witnessing rights is at the bottom of this email.

He: “I don’t care what the *&#$% laws are, I am telling you if you keep hassling these students, I will lay hands on you, you ignorant whacko Christian.” (This is an exact word for word quote).

Me: I’m no going to stop, but do you really think humans have bacteria ancestors?”

He: “Of course!”

Me: “Let me tell you one thing I am absolutely certain of. You will never engage me in a public debate and defend the Theory of Evolution.”

He (yelling): “I don’t need to! I did last year and I kicked your $#@*&$”

Me (whispering and smiling): “That is not what several of the students who were there said to me.” After which, he stormed off.

For the good of Pacifica High School, I emailed the principal informing her that one of her teachers is so passionate about evolution that they will physically threaten people. She responded very professionally.

Summary: Creation vs. Evolution is so important in how people shape their world view. There are a few teachers (but not all teachers) who are allowed to bash Creation while cramming the Theory of Evolution down students’ throats. These teachers become emotionally enraged at the thought that some students might read some scientific material that falsifies the Theory of Evolution. Teachers like him want to shape world views, not educate.
