Who Made God

Imagine a Christian is talking to a nonbeliever about whether God exists or not.

The Christian argues that since a television was made by a designer for a purpose, and that a computer was made by a designer for a purpose, it is the best explanation that eyes were made by a designer for a purpose or a bird was made by a designer for a purpose.

A typical response from the skeptic is "who made God then?" Before jumping there, I make sure my point was made by saying "I will gladly address that, but do you agree with my assertion that babies, solar systems, cells, birds are all created by a designer for a purpose?"

They may not want to acknowledge that and hedge, hedge or they may agree for the sake of argument, so now it is time to address who made God.

Here is how I respond: "the question who made God is a good question, but not the correct first question. Your first question should not be who made God, but it should be was God made? By saying who made God is like asking who stole this computer? The question is an assumption or presupposition. Thus you should not ask at first who made God, but the first question should be was God made?"

Was God made? Here is how I answer from here: To answer that I first must explain who I understand God to be: I believe God is supernatural, which means outside the natural world and thus not made up of energy and matter. As a supernatural God, I believe he created matter and energy. It is not blind faith to believe God created energy and matter, but it is sound science, because the First Law of Thermodynamics states energy and matter is neither created nor destroyed; thus natural processes can not create energy and matter. So, since God created matter and energy he must be outside matter and energy.

Ask them if they agree so far.

I also believe God created life. This is not blind faith but sound science since the Law of Biogenesis states life only comes from life; so the belief life started supernaturally is sound (but not 100% scientifically provable since a supernatural answer can not be proven scientifically, but all other explanations are falsified scientifically). So if God created life in the natural world, he is outside of "natural world type" life.

I also believe God created order. This is not blind faith but supported by the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Order does not occur over time by chance. So, God created matter, energy, life and order...

..I also believe God created something else....time. Now if God created time, guess what he must be outside of? Time. If you are independent of time what are you? Eternal! Simplifying Einstein’s relativity, we know matter and energy and life are functions of time, not independent of time.

God created matter and God created energy and God created life. All are functions of time; God is none of these so he is independent of time. So the answer of who made God is no one. The answer to "was God made" is no. Can we humans understand eternity? No. Neither can an ant understand the space shuttle, nor a baby in the womb understands running. There are limits to understanding and we humans could not fully comprehend what eternity is since we are in this time dependent existence. If you are talking to a skeptic it is important to say this answer indeed requires faith, but not blind faith. The faith is supported by natural laws of science, but not fully 100% proved by science.
