Witnessing Tip #3 WORLD WAR II TRIVIA & WITNESSING
At the beginning of World War II the Japanese got the jump on the United States and quickly seized several islands. The result of this was we had to conquer some of these islands before we could attack Japan.
The United States embarked on a practical and effective strategy...island hopping. Instead of fighting to retake every island, the US would only fight for a few islands, and leap frog past the islands that were not essential toward the goal of attacking Japan.
Now place yourself in the boots of a Japanese commander in charge of defending an island with the mythical name of "Miplace." As the commander, you take your job seriously, you are devoted to your cause. You work hard on your island’s defenses, you train your troops and constantly read and learn about the effective defense of an island. Miplace is an island that is fully prepared to defend.
One beautiful morning, your alert guards notice many ships silently cruising past your island, and the morning’s quiet is disrupted by their bombarding a neighboring island named "kidzkool." Kidzkool is bombed, invaded and overwhelmed. What is your reaction as a commander of Miplace? Do you go where the battle is or do you do what is comfortable and justifiable by being satisfied that your little island is safe and secure? Meanwhile, the war goes on and you never see another enemy ship. You feel content that your island was never taken, but the war was lost for your side.
It is my opinion too many Christians are like the content commander of Miplace. They equip themselves, but miss out on the battle, and as a result the war is lost. My hope is that you are equipped, but that you are not just equipped in case an "attack" comes. I hope you are bold enough to seek out witnessing opportunities. Seek out the struggle, don’t be bypassed! Teach a class at your church; equip as many youth as possible. What we have as Christians is truth and we must boldly share with a lost world.
I am hardly the most educated or intelligent Creationist. However I have done a lot of street witnessing and I would like to share the Do’s and Don’ts of what I feel is effective in witnessing.
DO: Keep your foundation on God and prayer. Pray before, after and during your chat!
DON’T: Ever attack the person’s character. Never call them naive, ignorant etc. Focus all your effort on their argument. Never make it personal, because they will reply in kind and nothing is gained. 1 Corinthians teaches we must love them. By being respectful and polite you will take away an excuse for them not to listen to you. Never interrupt them while they speak, its rude. If they interrupt you, you can softly say "I did not interrupt you, please let me finish and when you speak I promise not to interrupt you."
DON’T: Be afraid to say, "I don’t know," I will get back to you" (if you don’t have a response, it shows respect and is better than a poor answer). Also don’t be afraid to say "that’s a good point, I will look into it." Again it shows respect.
DO: Have fresh breath, it sounds shallow, but nobody wants to be pummeled by bad breath.
DON’T; Ever witness wearing sunglasses. Eye contact communicates. Sun glasses lessen communication skills.
DO: Know your audience!!!! Does this person need a Creation/Evolution witness? A hurting person may not need to hear that. Maybe they need to know of God’s love or grace. Always try to interject the wonderful changes in your life.
DON’T; Go down rabbit trails. If you raise the question "How did life originate?" and they quickly say "well who made God?" keep the discussion on your question, tell them you will answer that later, but first you want an answer to yours.
DO: Carry a pen and be willing to stay in touch and send them a Bible or Creation material if needed.
DON’T: Get discouraged. It would be great if everyone we met immediately repented and got baptized., but they don’t. We plant seeds...do seeds immediately show growth? I know that many people who told me about God while I was an atheist have no idea today I love the Lord. So just keep planting and do not get discouraged, God causes the growth.
If anyone wishes to go witnessing with me call Bill Morgan (714) 898-8331. Speaking for myself, I rarely look forward to witnessing, but I do it because it is important, and afterwards the blessing are tremendous!
